We will concentrate on  using the Adobe Reader window and learn the Adobe Reader toolbar. In this assignment we will use a variety of phrases and keywords in our searching. The linked pages are 2 to 3 MB, so be patient and let them download to your screen so you can see them. After you see them you can SAVE them the normal way if you desire to..

Assignment No. 11

Let’s explore NewspaperARCHIVE.  The directions below are based on having Adobe Reader v8 or higher on your computer.

NewspaperARCHIVE is the largest historical newspaper database online and contains tens of millions of newspaper pages from 1759 to present. Every newspaper in the archive is fully searchable by keyword and date, making it easy for you to quickly explore historical content. This is a subscription website, however, this assignment will work a bit different from the GenealogyBank web site. There is no login information and you  have no scheduled start or stop dates. When doing the examples below pay special attention to spelling and also which data box you are using. I have chosen words that will bring up minimal results so you won't have to sort through long lists.

This web site has a learning curve even for experienced computer users, so please be patient and I’ll help you use it by giving some examples. The method of searching scanned newspaper pages is called OCR or optical character reading. OCR is fairly accurate on clean new pages but older newspaper pages can have smears, extra marks or old type-setting styles that confuse the scan process. You will see examples of this on the search result pages when words appear scrambled or out of order. Click here to see my examples. Searches on this site are not case sensitive so APPLE is the same as searching for apple .

There are two basic ways to search - using scanned OCR for text and by issue date and place. OCR is not perfect - try both when you are not having much success.

After the page loads, click on the word SEARCH which is located on the NewspaperArchive main toolbar. The examples will all start on this advanced "Search" page so if you get confused or lost just return to the advanced search page again. There are other ways to narrow a search so we won’t be using quotation marks. All pages are saved as PDF files which gives you more choices in sharing and printing documents. Don't struggle trying to read small print - remember to use the tools (+ and -) to zoom in and out.

NewspaperARCHIVE uses Adobe Reader embedded within the browser and is another excellent example of today’s technology. Try zooming in and out with the plus (+) or minus (-) sign and changing the ‘Hand Tool’ to the ‘Select Tool’ (a right-click) and move the entire page around with your mouse using the ‘Hand Tool’. You can add a camera icon called a "Snapshot Tool" to the toolbar which allows you to select any part of the page and print just the area you select. Add it to the toolbar by clicking on 'Tools", then "Customize Toolbars', and scroll down (it's near the bottom) and put a check mark next to "Snapshot Tool" and it will appear on the Adobe Reader toolbar. To use it, push it in and drag your mouse across the section you want to print - then print the normal way and you will see the area you selected in the print preview window.

On most of the linked pages I have added a red box that shows you where the information is on the page. You will have to scroll up, down, left and right to view it. Again, remember to also zoom in or out using the + and - tools.
